Check whether FED or LAD are pinned to the taskbar

The first thing to check is whether FED or LAD are pinned to the taskbar. Having these pinned can prevent some background updates from completing when you open Access Legal Fusion using its icon.

  1. Check your taskbar for FED or LAD icons.

  2. If either is pinned, right-click the icon, then click Unpin from taskbar.

  3. Retry the action that produced the error.

If FED and LAD are not pinned to the taskbar, search the knowledge base again using the specific error message you are receiving. If there is no article that refers to your error, open the Access Digital Assistant and ask to speak to a human to be put through to our support team.

Document Register — "Could not find a part of the path" error

If you are seeing the error Could not find a part of the path '\\[server]\docs\ \[matter reference]' in the Document Register, a leading space in the client record name is causing an invalid file path to be generated. You can fix this by removing the leading space from the client record in Fee Earner Desktop.

Why this happens

The Document Register uses the client record to build file paths, unlike other areas of Access Legal Fusion which use the contact record. If the client record name has a leading space, that space is injected into the file path, producing an invalid path with a space before the matter folder name.

Fix the client record

To remove the leading space from the client record, follow these steps in Fee Earner Desktop.

  1. Open Fee Earner Desktop.

  2. Click Home, then click Browse, then click Client.

  3. Search for the client reference, for example the matter number.

  4. Open the client record and remove the leading space from the client name.

  5. Click Save, then retry adding the attachment in the Document Register.

📌Note: This change must be made in Fee Earner Desktop, not the Document Register. Because the Document Register references the client record directly, a space in the client name will cause a path error even if all other records appear correct.
