Overview

If you want .msg files to open in Outlook (Classic) (instead of the new Outlook or another app), you can set the file association in Windows by changing the Opens with setting on a saved .msg file.

Save an Email as a .msg File

  1. Open any email in Outlook.

  2. Click File > Save As.

  3. Choose a location to save the file.

  4. Set Save as type to Outlook Message Format (*.msg).

  5. Click Save.

Set Outlook (Classic) as the Default App for .msg Files

  1. Locate the saved .msg file in File Explorer.

  2. Right-click the file, then click Show more options (if shown).

  3. Click Properties.

  4. In the Opens with section, click Change.

  5. Select Outlook (Classic).

  6. Confirm and apply the change to set it as the default.

After this, .msg files should open in Outlook (Classic) by default.
